LEVEL III ADVANCED
FIELD GUIDES' COURSE
This fourteen day program is designed to
help you attain the knowledge necessary to pass the Level III exam, which has
become a real test of distinction, whilst also preparing you for the field
guides' real test of proficiency: The Practical
Evaluation.
Whilst passing your Level III is the
primary aim of the course, it does entail a lot more than this.
You will get a better understanding of the holistic nature of the bush; a grass
is no longer a piece of green, it becomes the result of the soil, which come
from the rock, and photosynthesis, and therefore sunlight, water and air, of
lunar cycle, photoperiod and weather; it becomes food for insect and bird, for
the flagellate in a ruminant's rumen, and ultimately feeds the lion, the
vulture, the beetle and the bacterium. This deeper understanding is what makes
you grow, as guide and as person, and make you more interesting for your guests.
The practical bush skills you learn also make you a more informative guide, a
better tracker, a better survivor and an altogether wiser person.
The course consists of lectures (guaranteed never to be boring), and game
drives, trails and other bush activities.
The FGASA Level III syllabus is covered
fully, but we do supply you with additional information and skills, which we
have found to be effective/necessary during our years of guiding and training.
The classes and practical activities are all presented in a natural environment,
and there is also exposure to the bigger animals (Big Five, Hippo, Giraffe etc.)
although the emphasis is on guiding skills and the bush as a whole, not guiding
as a Big Five chase!
The vehicle guide, trails guide, tour guide and bush enthusiast will all benefit
from the course equally. Whether you are currently Level I or II doesn't matter,
it will also help the Level I to get his Level II. Even if you already have
Level III, this course will still hugely improve your knowledge and skills base.
A bush background, such as FGASA Level I, a year's
guiding experience or completion of an equivalent basic field guide course is
assumed. The novice should first get any of the above before embarking on this!
